Hiking Mono Pass - 09/30/10

Steven, Paula and I hiked Mono Pass out of Little Lakes Valley a few weeks ago. It is also known as Rock Creek, Toms Place, etc. You start at the trailhead "Mosquito Flats", which is also the end of the road and the backpackers camp.

We had the goal of doing over 2000' total of elevation to get to 4th Recess Lake. This is what we wanted to see, but did not:

The clouds looked sunny toward the lake, but ominous looking back. We decided to stick to the overlook where you can tell where 4th Recess is, but good luck seeing the lake since it's down there. This is going up the pass.

And looking back toward where we came from through the pass:

At the top of Mono Pass is Summit Lake. Steven and the lake.
Looking North toward Pioneer Basin Lakes. In the far background are a series of lakes that would be amazing to backpack someday when I don't hurt my knee biking.

Necessary.

Of course, as usual, when we got back to the trailhead, it was sunnier and there was no thunder. And of course we ate at Pie in the Sky. Homemade chili and cheddar pear pie are pretty delicious. The only complaint I have is yellow cheese.
